Mala Hassett

Having had a business degree and career, I went back to university as a mature student and graduated with a first class degree in Graphic Design from Central St Martins, in London. Specialising in book design followed by many years of designing for leading London publishers. A family move to Switzerland found me picking up my paint brush. I’ve participated in a number of group shows and had my first solo show “Colours of Nostalgia” in Zurich in June 2021. Having returned to UK in 2021, I have continued to experiment and respond to my new geography.
I am an abstract landscape artist living and working in Dorset. Growing up in India I was surrounded by exciting colours. Something I did not appreciate until I moved to UK more than three decades ago.
Here, I miss colour. As an artist, I am constantly looking for avenues to recreate the visual gratification of India, in particular, the vibrancy of silk saris.
I draw inspiration from and respond to the landscape that surrounds me – Dorset my home and India, where I visit often. My work always starts at a specific location; then the colour takes over and transforms it to a frame filled with loss and nostalgia.
I may be painting Dorset but my palette allows me to be in India wrapping the landscape with the most luxurious silk sari I can conjure up.
