David Atkins

I studied painting at some of Britain’s finest art schools, including St. Martin’s School of Art and Winchester School of Art, gaining a First-Class Honours Degree in Painting in 1986.
The tradition of landscape painting has always been at the heart of my work. Painting directly in the landscape means I’m constantly faced with a subject that changes and transforms throughout the time I’m there, which I find endlessly inspiring. The weather, too, plays an essential role — it can transform what might seem a dull scene into a place of sublime beauty. I work quickly and will often rework an entire painting to capture these dramatic shifts.
I taught art for over twenty years as a part-time lecturer in both London and at the Arts Institute in Bournemouth. Throughout my career, I have exhibited regularly and have been included in many solo and group exhibitions across the UK. I currently show with the Thackeray Gallery and Fairfax Galleries, who keep me very busy.
My work has received several awards, including the Horan Prize for Painting at the NEAC and the Façade International Prize for Painting at the Discerning Eye Exhibition. Most recently, I was awarded the Baltic Exchange Prize for Painting at the Mall Galleries in London.
