Pia elliot drawing in gallery

Inspired by wildlife, Pia creates highly detailed, hand drawn artworks using pen and ink. Her works explore the juxtaposition between patterned regularity and organic animal forms, capturing the essence of her subject in ink. This contemporary style is entirely self taught, developed originally as a form of meditative doodling to manage anxiety.

Her creative process begins in nature, gathering inspiration by observing and photographing wildlife, both locally in Dorset and while travelling. Initial sketches and notes help capture authentic character, which she then refines back in her studio. This immersive process encourages a deep connection with her subject, allowing space for interpretation as she builds intricate layers of texture and form.

While drawing she uses a ‘pattern bank’ selecting and placing patterns as she sees fit. The featured patterns are developed from shapes and textures found in natural foraged objects, with her fascination for mandalas providing the foundations for these explorations. Her characterful collection invites viewers to experience a similar sense of curiosity, wonder, and connection with the natural world.
