My inspiration comes from love of landscapes and harbours in the South West as well as places from my travels. My work is bright and bold and has a naivety that makes you want to smile. I have an intuitive use of colour and use it to create work that gives an emotional response to a place and the harbour scenes especially create a feeling of nostalgia and homecoming.
Having studied ceramics and painting at Kingston art college and Combined Craft Design at South Bank University I wanted to use both medium in my work.I am really interested in surface texture and work in mixed media using air drying clay and fabrics to create collage paintings. The shapes of the buildings and boats are cut from clay and adhered to the canvas together with other materials. Then they are over painted using many layers of acrylics and glazes which gives vibrancy to the work and bring the subject to life.
The tactile element of clay and texture and printing possibilities really brings a landscape or harbour to life, and makes the painting much more than a 2 dimensional object.
I have had success in both joint and solo shows in Berkshire, Oxfordshire, Surrey and West London. I mainly work to commission now and I am currently represented by Fowey River Gallery and The Picture House Gallery Padstow.
