I was taught to draw accurately at Bournemouth College of Art in the early 60s , studying on an NDD course.
My love of drawing and reproducing what I see in front of me is still a driving force. Teaching made me explore the main drawing and painting media. I loved them all for their differences and their individual strengths.
But in the early 80s I saw an exhibition of work at the RA by Andrew Wyeth, who painted in egg tempera. I was immediately smitten by this medium and since that time my output has largely been in this medium.
Working with raw pigments bound with either egg yolk or casein binder gives me a very flexible medium that produces a paint that is brilliant at textures and, because there are no other ingredients, powerful, vibrant and absolutely lightfast colours are created.
All my Royal Academy exhibits, and most of my RBA & RSMA Mall Gallery showings have been in egg tempera.
My subject matter tends to come to me. I see objects and ideas all around. Much of my output is still the still life, most of which I set up in my studio, using items collected over the years – one of the dishes I use has been in the RA Summer exhibition twice- in 1987 and 2024. Another love is portraiture, which I practise weekly at a painting group
I love my work, and with each painting strive to challenge myself to extend my ability.
