Jonathan Greenup
Jonathan Greenup was born in 1959 and spent his early years in the unspoilt village of East Lulworth whose idyllic rustic scenery cast it’s spell on him. His family later moved to Bridport where Jonathan continued to be inspired by the rolling hills of Dorset.
Jonathan had various jobs including sign writing, graphic artist for a printing company and screen printer but his deepest longing was to become an artist.
Over the years Jonathan learned to draw and paint and express himself on canvas. Much knowledge and experience was obtained through classes, workshops and, ultimately, attending Art College. Jonathan gained a BTEC Higher National Diploma in Graphic Design in 1990. Between 1994 and 1996 he was taught Fine Art by Brian Graham at Bournemouth College of Art in Shelley Park gaining a Distinction. Jonathan did a further two years of study from 1996 to 1998 at Shelley Park under the tutelage of Peter Joyce, acquiring a further Distinction.
Jonathan has participated in many exhibitions in the southwest including the Rostra gallery in Bath, Fisherton Mills in Salisbury and the Royal West of England Academy in Bristol. However, Jonathan is never happier than when he is out with his pochard box, painting with oils “en plain air” trying to capture the ever changing light and colours of the coast. His landscapes convey a particular mood or a movement of cloud or changing weather and often a flash of light on the fields. Having bold brushwork and striking colour combinations, Jonathan’s work is about something felt as much as seen.
