Debbie Elsmore, Mosaic and Textile Artist
I am a mixed-media artist inspired by colour, texture, nature and the unexpected beauty of materials. My work moves between mosaic and felt-making, where I enjoy bringing together contrasting elements to create pieces that are tactile, expressive and full of character.
In my mosaics, stained glass and ceramics come together to capture light, colour and form. In my felt work, I layer Merino wool with sari silks, bamboo fibres and beautiful textiles, often incorporating recycled and found materials. I love the process of transformation,taking individual, sometimes discarded elements and giving them new life.
I grew up on a remote island in the South Atlantic Ocean, where the wildness of the landscape was an everyday part of life. The volcanic terrain, dramatic skies, vast ocean and ever changing light left a lasting impression on me. I believe that connection to this place continues to find its way into my work, through my love of textures and colours.
