“I have an urge to draw” – Lucas
Lucas (13) is a young artist who is already making his mark on the art world. During the Covid lockdown, Lucas was restless and in search of something to pass the time. He has always had a vivid imagination and an interest in drawing, and now he was able to spend hours developing and pursuing his interest in art.
He was captivated by Bob Ross videos that taught simple techniques that led effortlessly to beautiful landscapes. But, he really wanted to paint portraits and at the time they were very challenging. He started by painting dog portraits which proved to be very popular. Then, he turned his attention to detailed pencil drawings and started to really study the anatomy of the human face.
Recognition of his efforts came quickly. His drawing ‘Homeless Man’ in 2021 was selected by the Royal Academy of Arts and displayed in their online Summer show. Lucas turned next to colour and his portraiture took on an original and striking style of expressionism. This style gained him a place in the BBC’s Britain’s Best Young Artist 2023 portrait category where his artwork was the presenter’s choice.
Lucas is a prolific artist and his style continues to evolve. This year, he held his first solo exhibition as part of ‘Dorset Arts Weeks’ where over 50 pieces were on display. His artwork has already made it to Australia, Brazil, Canada, UK and the US.
