Georgia Cheer
I was born in Hampshire, UK, into an artistic family where my mother, grandmother and great-aunt were accomplished artists. It was natural for me to follow in this field. My parents emigrated to America, settling in California when I was a under a year old. My mother saved many of my childhood drawings and no doubt encouraged my artistic development. I entered California State University carrying art history and studio art credits from advanced courses taken in high school. There my education expanded into courses in printmaking (etching, linoleum and lithography) as well as calligraphy and design. I always felt I was best at drawing animals but could not see this ever making me a reliable living. A large 30 year gap of not creating art ended when I moved to Poundbury. I then discovered soft pastels in 2022. I find the intense pigments in pastels so vibrant and fulfilling they lend themselves to all sorts of subject matter. I now challenge myself to paint other subjects such as people, landscapes and seascapes.
I’m still on the road of discovery, seeking to improve my abilities by creating more pastel work, and to learn as well as contribute, to the local artist community.
