Abigail Whelan

Profile

My name is Abigail Whelan and I am an artist, potter and illustrator working from my studio in Blandford, Dorset.
After moving back to Dorset recently I am revelling in the glorious landscapes that surround me. I am inspired by the natural history of the countryside; from the tiny details of the natural world, to the vast vistas of Cranborne Chase. An interest in the folklore and legacy of ancient Britain also weaves its way into my work. I work in a variety of mediums including watercolours, oils, gouache and foraged inks. I have also found a love of pottery and am enjoying exploring all the possibilities it offers.

As a child, growing up on the Isle of Portland, I spent every spare minute drawing, filling endless sketch books with observations of the world around me. I studied fine art at Bournemouth and Poole College of Art and Design before going on to complete my degree in Fine Art Painting at The University of Brighton in 1999. Since then, I have dabbled in art while busy with family life and other work including running a successful business designing wedding cakes. Now I am happy to be able to devote my time to painting, and being able to combine that with exploring my beloved Dorset is a dream come true.
